Introduction

The urinary tract system produces, retains, and disposes urine from the body. It is segmented into upper tract and lower tract. Upper tract incudes kidneys and ureters, while lower tract includes bladder & urethra. In an adult, kidneys constantly filter blood to produce nearly 1ml of urine each minute and then transports this urine to bladder via ureters. The bladder stores the urine before expelling it through urethra. When the urinary tract is functioning normally, the urine is flushed out from urethra as bladder is emptied, thereby avoiding upward movement of bacteria from periurethral skin to first urethra and from there to bladder. However, some bacteria successfully manages to enter the bladder via urethra but it is removed from the bladder during micturition.

Additionally, the bladder’s internal surface is lined with urothelial cells and covered by glycosaminoglycan mucin that does not allow bacteria to stick to the inner surface of the bladder. In case, even if bacteria is still able to stick to the surface in spite of surface resistance offered by glycosaminoglycan mucin, then the immune system of the internal body system has ability to annihilate  this bacteria. However, in case of problems occurring in lower urinary tract like muscle atrophy or weak urinary sphincter, there is the occurrence of urinary incontinence meaning involuntary leak of urine from urethra.  Here, use of urinary catheter is inevitable. In case of enlargement of prostrate or urethral stricture or bladder stones or swelling of bladder, there is urinary retention meaning non-empting of urine from the bladder. In this case, urinary catheter is inserted in urethra for making the urine flow after surgery.

Furthermore, urinary catheter is an elongated tube which is made from various polymers with silicon utilized in large proportion along with latex rubber.

Market Growth Dynamics

Rise in the rate of ailments such as enlargement of prostrate, kidney problems, gall bladder stones, and nerve damage will steer the growth of the urinary catheters market over the years ahead. Apart from this, increase in the number of surgeries and prominent rise in the proportion of aging population prone to urinary tract infections will steer the business growth over the forthcoming years. In addition to this, surge in the incidences of urinary continence in the people will further steer the market growth.

Furthermore, inactive lifestyle, indiscipline or messy life patterns, and unhealthy eating or incorrect dietary habits along with stressful as well as hectic lifestyle has resulted in urinary tract ailments, thereby driving the market trends.

However, healthcare industry has witnessed many hospital-acquired nosocomial urinary tract infections due to use of urinary catheters and this has resulted in incurrence of huge healthcare costs along with critical illness. To overcome this limitation of the product, researches have introduced urinary catheters manufactured with different kinds of advanced antimicrobial coating materials that will avoid causing of hospital acquired infection in patients. This, in turn, will enlarge the market scope over the forthcoming years.
