Abstract

Global Trona Market: Overview

Trona is a non-marine mineral and is a natural form of sodium sesqui-carbonate. It is also known as sodium carbonate and its molecules are made of sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, and two waters of hydration. Its molecular formula is Na2CO3NaHCO32H2O. The name trona has derived from a Swedish term which means native salt. Trona forms efflorescent crusts on the walls of mines and caves in the arid regions and is found in deposits. Trona is the light brown solid, odorless dust, or crystal used in glass manufacturing and other varied industrial applications. It is majorly used for water conditioning and also used as a food additive. Trona is a common source of soda ash. Use of soda ash is mainly seen in paper, chemicals, glass, and textiles industry.

Global Trona Market: Segmentation

The global trona market is segmented into its industrial use segments, functional use segments, and geography. On the basis of the industrial use segments, the market is divided into chemicals which further includes soaps, detergents, and glass, air pollution control, animal feed, paper and pulp, and mining and metals. Based on functional use segments, the market is divided into bath salts and water treatment which is further sub-divided into softening agent and cleaning agent.

Diversification of the market on the basis of the regions is seen into Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa.

Global Trona Market: Growth Factors

The trona market is an emerging market owing to increasing demands from the glass manufacturers which is majorly driving the market growth. Trona is extensively used in industrial applications of soda ash in detergents, glass, and textiles. Wide industrial applications, availability of trona in the mines and concentrated source of mines are other major factors fuelling the market growth. However, prolonged contact with the trona may cause skin and eye irritation. Also, carbon dioxide and heat are emitted when trona reacts with acid which results in major air quality concerns and environmental issues. Owing to these negative factors, the growth of the trona market may be hampered.

Global Trona Market: Regional Analysis

The largest share of the trona market is held by North America. Soda ash and trona are largely exported by the U.S. which accounts for the growth in North America. It is in the Southwestern Wyoming mines in the Wilkins Peak Member of Green River where the largest deposit for trona is found across the world. Apart from the U.S., trona is also mined in Turkey, China, Mexico, and Africa. Hence, North America is steadily followed in its growth by regions such as Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Middle East and Africa. Growth in Europe will be moderate as compared to the other regions in the coming years.

Global Trona Market: Competitive Players

Some of the prominent market players in the global trona market include OCI Chemical Corp., Tata Chemicals North America Inc., and Solvay Chemicals Inc.
