Analysis

The natural coloring of a human or animal's skin is known as pigmentation. Pigmentation is created due to the deposition of melanin, a pigment produced by melanocytes. Melanocytes are present below the epidermis. The oxidation of tyrosine, an amino acid, results in the production of melanin. Keratinocytes carry melanin to the skin surface. During skin pigmentation disorders, the color of the skin is affected. When melanocytes are damaged or become unhealthy the melanin production of the body is disturbed. This defect either darkens or lightens the skin. This abnormality of skin color can affect some skin patches or the whole body. Higher production of melanin results in darkening of the skin, whereas less production of melanin makes the skin lighter.

Hyperpigmentation refers to skin darkening caused by increased levels of melanin. Conditions that can cause hyperpigmentation include pregnancy, Addison's disease, and exposure to sunlight, among others. During hyperpigmentation, brown, red or pink spots or clusters appear on the skin surface. The affected skin areas appear dark compared to the rest of the skin. Spending time under the sun or acne breakout further aggravates hyperpigmentation. Some of the spots go away over a period of time; however, certain spots require intensive treatments. There are three main types of hyperpigmentation: sunspots, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and melasma. Sunspots develop on areas of the skin exposed to intense sunlight like face, neck, and hands. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is caused due to skin inflammation or injury. Melasma is caused as a result of hormonal changes.

Global Pigmentation Disorders Treatment Market

Hypopigmentation refers to the loss of skin color. Hypopigmentation is majorly caused due to genetic conditions, harsh environmental conditions, or injuries. Hypopigmentation is characterized by depletion of melanin, melanocytes, or amino acid tyrosine. It may be localized or can spread throughout the body. Multiple areas of the skin appear white in localized hypopigmentation. Some chronic skin disorders like Albinism, Vitiligo, Seborrheic dermatitis, Tinea versicolor, and Pityriasis Alba causes hypopigmentation. Hypopigmentation can be treated by using laser treatments or skin grafting.

As per the UN estimates, Albinism is present in 1 out of 17,000 to 20,000 people in North America and Europe. In Africa 1 in every 5,000 to 15,000 people have albinism. Around 80% of pregnant women in Mexico and 50-75% of pregnant women in the U.S. are affected by melasma. Prevalence of albinism is high in African nations. Approximately 1 in 5,000 to 15,000 people are estimated to be affected by albinism.

Factors such as high demand for skin lightening treatments, increasing spending on lifestyle, growing prevalence of skin disorders, and global warming will act as driving factors to the growth of global pigmentation disorders treatment market. Moreover, increasing adoption of smoking in young adults, high disposable income, and growing demand from millennials will boost the global pigmentation disorders treatment market. The rise in research and development activities and growth of medical tourism will act as an opportunity for the market players in the pigmentation disorders treatment market. However, high costs related to cosmetic therapy and lack of awareness regarding skin disorders in developing regions will restrict the growth of global pigmentation disorders treatment market.

The global pigmentation disorders treatment market has been segmented into treatment, key disease indications, end use, and region. The treatment segment has been segmented into chemical peels, microdermabrasion, topical drugs, phototherapy, and laser therapy. Chemical peels segment holds the maximum share of the treatment segment owing to a rise in disposable income. Based on key disease indications, pigmentation disorders treatment market has been segmented into vitiligo, melasma, albinism, solar lentigines, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Based on end use, pigmentation disorders treatment market has been segmented into dermatology centers, hospitals, and aesthetic clinics.

North America will be the dominant region during the forecast period. Heavy research and development activities and focus on lifestyle products will drive the market growth in this region. Europe will be the second largest market. The Asia Pacific is expected to grow at a rapid rate over the forecast period. Increase in medical tourism from North American and European countries will boost the pigmentation disorders treatment market in this region. Latin America market will grow at a conservative rate during the forecast period. The Middle East and Africa are expected to experience appreciable growth in the near future.

Some of the key players in the pigmentation disorders treatment market include Allergan, Inc., Episciences, Inc., Bayer AG, La Roche-Posay, Pierre Fabre Laboratories, SkinCeuticals International, Obagi Medical Products Inc., and Alvogen, Inc. among others.
