Abstract

Thermal decomposition or processes such as incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons like coal gas, natural gas, and petroleum oil produce finely separated black powder. This black powder is known as carbon black. With the help of processes such as acetylene, channel, and black furnace, black carbon is produced in the form of black-colored colloidal particles. The main application of carbon black is in the textile industry where it is used as a dyeing agent.

Most of the produced carbon blacks are mainly used in applications such as tire and rubber. The synthetic textile fibers like acrylic, polyester, and nylon use carbon black as a dyeing agent. The dyeing agent mainly imparts colors to the fibers. Other profitable crops are preferred rather than cotton owing to their low tensile strength and high cost which will continue in the future, thereby increasing the demand for synthetic fibers. This will be one of the major reasons for the market growth of carbon black as polyester is the widely used synthetic fiber. Polyester is one of the major product segments of carbon black. Crude oil derivatives are the main raw materials used in the production of carbon black. Thus, there is uncertainty in the market growth owing to the prices of crude oil. The production of carbon black leads to the emission of several harmful gasses like carbon monoxide leading to environmental issues. Thus, the government has raised strict protocols to control the production of carbon black. This factor may hamper the global carbon black market in future. New methods and technologies are being used to produce carbon black from bio-based sources. The carbon black produced from bio-based sources will provide ample opportunities for the carbon black market growth.
