Rising awareness of the basalt fibers to boost the global continuous basalt fiber market

Basalt fiber is a virtual beginner in the family of structural composites and fiber reinforced polymers. It has a composition of a chemical similar to glass fiber but has enhanced strength characteristics, and unlike the majority glass fibers is extremely acidic as well as alkaline resistant. The property of salt attack makes it a good candidate for bridge, concrete, and shoreline arrangements thus boosting the global continuous basalt fiber market.

When compared to aramid and carbon fiber, it has the characteristic of broader application temperature range between +650° C to -269° C (1,200° F to -452° F), higher radiation resistance, higher oxidation resistance, higher shear strength, and higher compression strength. The old Soviet Union studied and examined the process of manufacturing fibers from basalt was at the time of cold war. On the other hand, the limited production and commercial research were carried out in the U.S. during the same time span. The Soviets examined basalt as a foundation of fiber for the textiles that were resistant to ballistic. The study also says that the research and examination carried out at the time of cold war by the old Soviet Union resulted in the rise of production of basalt fibers by 34% in the U.S.

The cost of fibers that are generated from basalt is much more than those produced from E-glass but is less than aramid, S-glass, or carbon fiber. As the global production elevates, the price of production of fibers should decrease further.
